Australia Visitor/Tourist Visa

A unique and diverse country in every way – Australia has a wide array of cities and towns to visit, each with incredible food, beaches, breathtaking natural treasures and varied landscape. The country has been playing host to a number of tourists and businessmen for years.

For those who wish to travel to Australia, there are a number of travel visa available for visiting Australia:

Basic Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a tourist visa, the applicant must:

  • have genuine intention to visit the country
  • satisfy health and character requirements
  • demonstrate that he/she has sufficient funds to support their travel
  • Applicants who apply for a visa whilst outside the country must be outside the country at the time of grant.
  • Applicants who are in Australia (applying for a visa extension) must be inside the country at the time of grant.

Visa Processing Time

Processing time for an Australian tourist visa can take anywhere from 1 working day to 1 month varying from case to case.

Visitors to Australia must be willing and able to abide by the visa validity and conditions while in Australia. If they do not abide by these conditions, their visa may be cancelled or they might be subject to other penalties.

1. Short Travel Visa (ETA)

Applicants, who wish to visit their families and friends in Australia, can apply to procure Tourist or Short Travel Visa, which allows them to stay in Australia for up to 3 months on each arrival within 12 months from the date the visa was granted.

Visitors from eligible countries* can obtain an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA).   Applicants from non-ETA but eligible countries, who wish to stay in Australia for more than 3 months, might have to make paper-based tourist visa application.

General Requirements

In order to obtain a Tourist or Short Travel visa, applicants must

  • intend to visit Australia as a tourist only, i.e. for visiting family and friends and for recreation
  • fulfill the health and character requirements
  • be able to establish the possession of adequate funds to support their travels in Australia

This is an offshore visa, therefore, applicants should be outside of Australia while applying and while the visa is being issued.

Business travelers from the following eligible countries* can obtain an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA).

2. ETA Tourist Visa

The Electronic Travel Authority (or ETA) is the name given to the most commonly used Australian Tourist Visa that allows applicant to stay in Australia for up to 3 months on each arrival within 12 months from the date the visa was granted.

The ETA differs from traditional visas as there are no application forms to fill in and no visa label or stamp in the passport.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for an Australian ETA Tourist Visa, the following eligibility criteria should be met:-

  • Applicant must demonstrate that they have enough funds to support their travel
  • Applicant must not intent to seek or undertake any job in Australia
  • Applicant should not have any criminal record and promise to comply with the laws of the country
  • Applicant may have to undergo medical examinations
  • Applicant who plan to stay with relatives or friends must also provide invitation letter

3. E-Visitor Visas

The Australian E Visitor Visa is designed for people who are NOT on the ETA Eligible Country list, or people who wish to take a trip to Australia for longer than 3 months.

With a validity of 12 months, this temporary visa allows the holder to stay in Australia for 3 months from the date of each entry.

Basic Requirements

In order obtain e-visitor visa, applicant should be able to fulfill the following criteria:

  • Applicants should be holding E Visitor Visa eligible passport.
  • Applicants should have an authentic intention to visit Australia as a tourist, i.e. for visiting family & friends and for recreation.
  • Applicant must fulfill the health and character requirements.
  • Applicant must have access to sufficient funds to cover his/her expenses while in Australia

Since this is an offshore visa, therefore, while applying, applicants should be outside of Australia and also while the visa is being issued.

4. ETA Business Visitor Visa

Those who wish to make business visits to Australia should apply for the Australian Business Visitor visa, which allows the holders to make short trips for negotiating business, attending conferences or making an examining business visit.

Australia offers two types of Business Visitor ETAs:

  • Long Stay– this visa category is for applicants who wish to make regular business visits to Australia in a span of three months. However, this program will be applicable for the life of the passport or within a ten year period (whichever is shorter)
  • Short Stay – this visa category is appropriate if applicants make occasional business visits to Australia. It is valid for a period of up to three months in a one year period.
